* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
THE combined assets of the 78 commercial banks headquartered in Los Angeles County were worth $92.2 billion as of June 30, 2008. That's up $5.2 billion from a year earlier. As a group, the banks have seen a significant decline in returns on assets and equity over the past 12 months. Returns on assets were 0.2 percent during the first six months of 2008. compared with 1.6 percent during the first six months of 2007. Returns on equity fell to 1.9 percent during the first six months of 2008. compared with 12 percent for the first six months of 2007. City National Bank tops the list with $16 billion in assets. It is followed by Pasadena-based East West Bank with $11.8 billion in assets, and Los Angeles-based Cathay Bank with $10.8 billion.
